Ciel variable is a not-for-profit cultural organization active in the culture and contemporary art sphere, and specializing in photographic and digital images.
For almost thirty years, we have published a magazine that highlights Quebec photographic practices related to the most influential international practices and promotes analysis of what they are expressing by calling upon authors specializing in image studies. Since May 2010, the magazine’s website has also made available to the public a massive archive containing some 4,000 images and 1,000 essays by some 750 artists and 350 authors.
Today, the development of new initiatives is increasingly reliant on partnerships and on the support of people interested in contemporary culture and concerned with maintaining independent sites for reflection.
If you feel that the work we do is relevant, you should know that:
Every fall, we organize a donation campaign for the end of the year. All funds raised are used to develop the magazine, with a particular emphasis on digital initiatives.
• Online, with PayPal (secure payment by credit card, debit card, or PayPal account)
• By mail (by filling out the attached form)
• By telephone (call 514 390-1193, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)
We have also instituted, under the generic title of Artgeist, fundraising campaigns focused on an encounter between artists and collectors and the creation of new artworks. A first version, Sitegeist, has already taken place, and six significant works were created.

For many years, Ciel variable has been a recognized charity organization. For each donation a charity tax receipt will be issued to you.
Ciel variable regularly seeks volunteers to assist during magazine issue launches and to staff our presence at contemporary art fairs and other public events. If such an experience interests you, don’t hesitate to contact us.
We also occasionally offer internships for tasks related to production or distribution of the magazine.
Subscribing to the magazine is always the very first gesture of support that you can make. It also contributes directly to increasing knowledge of those who make the culture of the contemporary image.
