I hadn’t previously had a chance to see the work of Simon Émond, a queer photographer living in the community
of Métabetchouan–Lac-à-la-Croix, in real life. My only contacts with their emerging practice had been through
a presentation that a colleague had made to a jury and by perusing artist books that they had produced essentially through crowdfunding – a business model that they have frequently used. At Langage Plus, Émond, a self-taught artist, transposed into the gallery the images from their photobook Say My Name/Dis mon nom, for which they had received the Burtynsky Grant in 2024.

Bernard Lamarche is the curator of contemporary art at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ). He filled the same position at the Musée régional de Rimouski from 2005 to 2012. Previously, he was an art critic and journalist for Le Devoir for almost ten years. He has curated numerous exhibitions and published many articles, essays, and exhibition catalogues.
