In 1987, Robert Fréchette, Jean-François LeBlanc, and Martin Roy founded Agence Stock Photo in Montreal. The three shared a humanist vision of documentary photography and wanted to stay independent of the large press groups; they took inspiration from agencies such as Magnum and VU. Over Stock’s thirty years in existence – it was active until 2017 – eleven other photographers joined the collective at various times and for different periods.
Although these photographers’ journalism work has been published internationally and included in monographs and exhibitions (Rencontres d’Arles, Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie, Zoom Photo Festival Saguenay, Mois de la Photo à Montréal [now MOMENTA]), it has never before been collected in a book dedicated to the agency. With the intention of “providing a lasting record of this type of Quebec photography and underscoring the notable contribution of Agence Stock Photo in this field,” as Sophie Bertrand writes in the introduction, the book’s editors selected 117 colour and black-and-white pictures, all taken in Quebec, from among the thousands produced by the group.
