The exhibition Travelling presented the practice and life of the acclaimed experimental filmmaker Chantal Akerman (1950–2015), for whom a film was a place to be brought into being, a precarious and personal journey toward the visible. To this end, starting in the 1990s, she began to show her films in museums and galleries, turning away from the traditional venue of the movie theatre. As well as creating new works, she refashioned several others to engage with the changed viewer relationship afforded by the new format. She also felt that the presenting her works in galleries and museums allowed her greater artistic freedom than could be found within the more rigid confines of the film industry.

Stephen Horne studied at the University of Victoria and at York University in Toronto. He taught media and fine arts at NSCAD University in Halifax between 1979 and 2005 and has lived in Montreal and France since 1999. Since 1980, his writings have been published in periodicals, catalogues, and anthologies in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia.
