Jacynthe Carrier and Anne­-Marie Proulx, co­ directors of VU, centre de diffusion et de produc­tion de la photographie since 2015, share a com­munity spirit that is manifested in how they have worked together in the roles of executive and artistic management of the artist-­run centre, opening it to a variety of practices. Each works with images, but they both see human relation­ ships – expressed by connections with living things or with environments – as most important. Carrier explores how we live, create, belong. Through in situ performative scenes, created in close collaboration with artists or non-­artists, she orchestrates situations that encourage both self-determination and associations among places, people, and things. Proulx creates poetic worlds infused both with interactions between landscapes and those who experience them and with how language enters the picture. Through photography and words, she explores the physical and metaphoric spaces that we occupy and that, in turn, mark us. With Carrier and Proulx, pho­tography at VU is central to exchanges among artists and with the community, affirming itself as a means of reflection and expression about the world…
