On a rainy Vancouver day, when most of the city’s vibrant colour is sapped and replaced by greyscale, the downtown core is especially downcast. Postmodern steel-and-glass skyscrapers appear starved for light, desperately reaching out toward cloud-filled skies. As I walk down Nelson Street, at the base of yet another unremarkable multi-storey condominium building, a set of bright photographs catches my eye: eight still lifes of plants and flowers show off a wet and plasticky tactility that mirrors the moisture of their environment, but with unmistakable colourful accents. The alluring photographic scenes offer respite from the monotony of the soaked concrete, but they also raise questions about the construction, manipulation, and veracity of images that circulate in public spaces…
