This book, published by a university press in spring 2023, bears a title that might lead one to believe that it addresses the publics for works circulating in digital networks. It is not so much the public that it addresses but the public space, what Jurgen Habermas called the “public sphere.” Artworks rede ne or problematize this space at the juncture of the urban environment and digital networks. As we know, the art of reflection often aims at articulating questions that make it possible if not to find satisfactory or definitive answers, at least to counter received ideas or highlight neglected aspects of observed or questioned phenomena. The authors in this book observe artists’ practices, notably those that are photographic or involve photography, and explore their circulation in social networks. That’s why the inclusion of an instructive essay on the history1 of Instagram is not surprising…
