The fascinating documentary Derrière chaque image, une histoire, broadcast during the National Day for Truth and Reconcilation,1 highlights projects aimed at recovering the names of Inuit and Indigenous people who, in colonial history – our history – have been banished from memory by being labelled “anonymous.” Millions of images are conserved in public archives with generic captions – many of them absurd if not downright racist – that bury the identity of these people. With rapper Samian to guide us, we visit Canadian cities where researchers and artists have initiated such projects. Directed by Jean-François Fontaine for Les Films Sanajik (sanajik is an Inuktitut word that means “maker” and designates the person who cuts umbilical cords), Derrière chaque image, une histoire was scripted and produced by Elisapie Isaac and Marie-Carole Noël. Isaac, an Inuk well-known author, composer, and performer, is president of Films Sanajik; Noël is the company’s vice-president. Here is our conversation…
