Gabor Szilasi was first and foremost a great humanist, deeply affable and genuinely interested in the people he encountered. This interest fuelled a lifelong passion for documentary photography, leading him to become one of the photographers who offered some of the most insightful and moving portraits of life in rural Quebec and of the architecture of Montreal’s neighbourhoods.

With a body of work comprising some 100,000 images and a strong commitment to university teaching, Gabor became one of the pillars of documentary photography in Canada. He taught and inspired multiple generations of image-makers and had a lasting influence on the artistic community.
