Show Grid Show List

Gabor was, first and foremost, a great humanist, deeply affable and sincerely interested in everyone he met. That sense of interest also drove his passion for documentary photography, and during his long career he produced among the fairest and most touching portraits of life in the Quebec countryside and of the architecture of Montreal neighbourhoods.

Having produced some hundred thousand images and with a strong commitment to university teaching, Gabor became one of the pillars of documentary photography in Canada. He trained multiple generations of image practitioners and had a lasting influence on the art world.

To pay him tribute, we reproduce here some of the articles published in the magazine over the years to do justice to his rich contributions and achievements.

November 4, 2019 [originally published in Spring 2016] — Eighty-eight years old. Decorum would have us qualify this age as venerable. Anyone who divides this number into decades will better measure the span of a lifetime devoted almost entirely to photography. We know about the immense contribution of Gabor Szilasi, who was born in Budapest in 1928 and arrived in Quebec after leaving Hungary in 1956, to the history of Quebec photography…

Gabor Szilasi, Un certain regard – Martha Langford, Gabor Szilasi : An Appreciation

[Spring 2010] Over the years, Gabor Szilasi has assembled a remarkable portrait of Quebecers as a community and of the Montreal urban landscape that earned him the Prix Borduas in 2009. Perhaps it took a com- pletely new eye to tease into visibility the multiple fibres woven into Quebec society. Szilasi’s portraits form a major […]

Recollecting home, Gabor Szilasi’s photographs of Exile and Return – Sharon Murray

[Fall 2006] What is less well known is that he photographed in Hungary around the time of his flight to Canada in 1957 and again during his return to Budapest more than twenty years later. Photography was fundamental to Szilasi’s experience: it acted as a means for him to both articulate and negotiate the disjunction […]
