Iranian artist Shirin Neshat’s exhibition The Fury resonates strikingly with current events. Neshat addresses the subject of violence perpetrated on people imprisoned for political reasons in the Islamic Republic of Iran, with a specific focus on the treatment of women and girls, many of whom are assaulted, raped, and exploited while confined. We can’t help but think of the death of student Mahas Amini after her arrest by the morals police, and the violent demonstrations that followed. Neshat’s cinematographic installation is in two parts: first, a virtual reality work; second, a pair of videos deployed on two screens facing each other. At the heart of the exhibition is a profound exploration of the construction of power through the gaze: who is looking at what and from what position?…
