June 22, 2021 [originally published in French only in CV108 in Winter 2018] — It seems less and less possible to analyze photography and photographic history without talking about production protocols, dissemination strategies, and contexts for conservation and display in public collections. Lynne Cohen, False Clues: Space Within Place – Philippe Guillaume

Ciel variable 95 – CYBER / ESPACE / PUBLIC | Essays
Authors: Philippe Guillaume | Artists: Lynne Cohen

May 9, 2018 [originally published in CV95 in Fall 2013] — Lynne Cohen’s recent exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal presents much more than a display of captivating and masterful large-size photographs of interior spaces. At first glance, False Clues could be described as an imposing photographic project documenting ordinary interior spaces. However, the titles of the twenty-five chromogenic prints and fifteen gelatin-silver prints selected for the show (like those of most of her photographs) discourage any documentary connotation…

Lynne Cohen, Photographies – Stephen Horne, Rooms of Screens/Screens of Rooms

Ciel variable 89 - PLACES | Portfolios
Authors: Stephen Horne | Artists: Lynne Cohen

March 27, 2017 [originally published in CV89 in Fall 2011] — Lynne Cohen has been photographing generic architectural interior spaces for several decades. Photographing rooms is, and has always been, her subject. Some of these rooms are health spas, classrooms, and hotel lobbies, while others are more sinister – laboratories, control rooms, and military sites. In a Cohen photograph, however, even an innocent health and relaxation facility can appear in an unusually “posed” mode.

[Fall 2011] Being attentive to the environments that one passes through. [Winter 1996-1997] The odour of photographed things is tenacious and disconcerting: acrid, tepid, tart, icy, fetid, chemical, hygienic, aseptic, nauseating. An odour of “miserable humanity” in an auditorium, a waiting room, a dance hall, a bourgeois living room, an observation room, a treatment room, a shooting gallery, a classroom, a hairdressing salon, an exhibition hall, […]
